Protecting Ideas & Innovation - An IP workshop with Pillsbury

Ideas are the bedrock of business. Whatever you are producing if it involves an element of Intellectual Property (IP) you need to protect it first so you can commercialise it later.

For many companies - new and established - the area of IP can be a murky one. Split into two sections (on IP and Non-Disclosure Agreements), this workshop presented by law firm Pillsbury WSP aims to help you identify when your product needs to be protected and how.

IPR

In this section Steve Farmer and Tania Williams from Pillsbury will kick off with a quick refresher of the different types of intellectual property rights and how they arise.

Then, using a case study, they will look deeper at the issues concerning recognising and establishing ownership, and how to protect and license intellectual property rights. The aim will be to provide you with an awareness of the legal issues arising at each of these stages.

Non-disclosure Agreements (NDAs)

Whether approaching investors, talking to your fellow entrepreneurs or chatting about your new idea down the pub it's essential to have that idea protected. NDAs provide one of the more formal ways of doing that.

Using an example NDA, Samuel Pearse will run through why NDAs are used, the key issues to look out for. The session will cover confidentiality provisions and how to protect yourself once discussions have ended.
